Austrian Citizenship

Austrian Citizenship

Citizenship is defined as the legal relationship of a person belonging to a certain State. Austrian citizenship entails numerous rights, such as the participation in elections, but also certain duties, e.g. military service.

Furthermore, Austrian citizenship also means citizenship of the European Union. As citizen of one of the 27 member states of the European Union, citizens of the European Union enjoy numerous rights in other member states whose citizenship they do not possess.

According to the Constitution, the power of legislation concerning citizenship lies with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, whereas the nine provinces are in charge of its implementation. The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not an authority in citizenship matters, the Austrian diplomatic representations abroad act merely in an advisory capacity.
